Root Canal Treatment – Everything you need to Know

Category:

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a dental medical procedure that involves the removal of infected or damaged tissue from inside the root canal of the tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. At EgoDent, we encourage treating and preserving damaged teeth as much as possible rather than removing them to strengthen and maintain dental health.

The road to root canal treatment begins with tooth pain or sensitivity to temperature and touch, often caused by advanced decay or infection at the tooth’s root. Other symptoms may include swelling of the gums or face and discharge or unpleasant odor.

What is the procedure for root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment begins with administering a local anesthetic that provides pain relief. Removal of the infected tooth crown and pulp gives access to the root canal. The canal is cleaned, disinfected, and filled with a biocompatible material, usually a gutta-percha paste. Finally, the prosthesis can be restored with a template or a crown, depending on the needs of each patient who crosses the threshold of our dental clinic EgoDent.

Root canal treatment can be performed in one session for simple cases, but more complex problems may require several sessions. During the healing phase, the patient may experience pain, which can be relieved with medication or other dental procedures.

If the tooth root infection is left untreated, it can spread to other body parts and cause more severe complications. Therefore, patients should consider tooth removal only as a last resort and save the teeth through endodontic therapy.

You must consult your dentist to determine if you need a root canal. We also recommend you learn about the procedure and the possible benefits and risks from reliable sources. Suppose you are informed about the steps of the process, the risks, the anesthesia options, and the postoperative treatment methods. In that case, you can make the right treatment decisions and know what to expect during and after the procedure.
